Conferences

Canada has a strong tradition in theoretical and computational chemistry. Regular international conferences in these fields have been organized for over half a century and have attracted many Canadian and international speakers of renown.

The first Canadian conference focussed on theoretical chemistry was organized in 1965 by Fraser Birss and Serafin Fraga as the Alberta Symposium on Quantum Chemistry. This developed into the Canadian Symposium on Theoretical Chemistry (CSTC), a triennial conference in rotation with two other conferences, the International Congress of Quantum Chemistry and the American Conference on Theoretical Chemistry. In 1983, the Canadian Association of Theoretical Chemistry was incorporated by participants in the 8th CSTC.

In 1991, another triennial conference series was inaugerated, the Canadian Computational Chemistry Conference (CCCC), by André Bandrauk and André Michel. This conference focussed on computational chemistry and ran until 2009. At the business meetings of the 7th CCCC in Halifax (2009) and the 17th CSTC in Edmonton (2010) it was decided to merge the two conference series under the title of Canadian Symposium on Theoretical and Computational Chemistry (CSTCC). To acknowledge the legacy of the twenty-four previous CSTC and CCCC meetings, the first merged symposium was named the 25th CSTCC. It continues biennially and is the largest regular meeting of theoretical chemists in Canada.

Information about previous meetings is archived below. Special thanks go to Prof. Mariusz Klobukowski (University of Alberta) who has collected and preserved most of the older documents.
